Literacy in Australia
There have been many articles in the media of late concerning the low literacy level of children in our schools today. Being literate is having the ability to read and write. In society today, if you lack this skill your chances of becoming successful are greatly decreased.
An illiterate child can be assisted while in school. There are literally millions of illiterate or semi-literate adults either in the workplace or trying to get into the workplace. These individuals and their inabilities because of their literacy levels, greatly impact our lives. It is a situation of magnitude. We have effective tools for its resolution.
Phonics is the most effective method of teaching reading. It teaches that letters and combinations of letters represent specific sounds. We teach phonics to students of all ages and abilities: beginning reader, foreign language student, reading remediation (fixing reading difficulties) and helping an already successful reader to improve.
